Author Visits

Terry Davis is available to conferences, libraries, schools and special events for author visits. Though he has an experiential base as an award winning novelist and educator that merits a substantial speaking fee, his love of outreach allows him to consider nearly any offer that includes travel expenses -- airfare and hotel. So please keep Davis in mind.

DAVIS VISITS COUER D'ALENE HIGH SCHOOL

Noted novelist and teacher Terry Davis made a visit to CHS on May 30, 2003.  High school English teacher Bruce Pemberton, a former Davis student from the University of Idaho, arranged visits to four rooms, including two weight-training classes taught by wrestling coach and CHS coach of the year, Jeff Moffat. "He told my students that possibly our national obsession with winning and losing might need some examination. He gave the example of a cancer patient losing a valiant struggle with the disease. Since the person lost the battle, are they a loser? He then related it to the kids themselves and reminding them that the important part was the struggle and the effort, and not necessarily, who won. The kids thought he kicked ass."

Davis also spoke to a junior English class, as well as Pemberton's fourth hour seniors, who were the most familiar with Davis' work. Unfortunately, Davis' visit coincided with Senior Skip Day activities. Pemberton introduced Davis to one senior who clearly was still feeling the effects of inebriation, and in fact, fell asleep during Davis' reading by pulling his weather-beaten ball cap low over his eyes. The rest of the class remained receptive, however.

One student, who had written a book report on VQ, was not so easily won over. "I had a bone to pick with him," said senior wrestler Zach Zabel. "I was mad about the ending of VISION QUEST. I wanted to know what happened. I liked what he said, though. It's the journey, not the destination. I can accept that."

After the reading, Davis accompanied a large group of students to the local Chinese buffet, where they overindulged themselves until they were asked to leave by the manager. Wearied by his long trip west, Davis returned to his Loon Lake cabin northwest of Spokane to begin a much-deserved summer break.
